With manufacturers including Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, LG, Lenovo and Motorola unveiling foldable phones over the past couple of years, customers have looked to Apple for its response. But will there ever be a foldable iPhone? Although Apple gave first hint of foldable iPhone in late 2016’s however it’s going to be 4 year and no foldable iPhone in the market yet by Apple.

Apple is not the first to launch a product. The iPod wasn’t the first music player; the iPhone wasn’t the first smartphone; the iPad wasn’t the first tablet; and the Apple Watch wasn’t the first smartwatch.

Apple has started exploring a foldable screen for the iPhone, although for now the plan is in very early stages and not even a fully-working prototype is on the table. Or so notes one report that says that Apple is checking out foldable and flexible screens that it can include in the iPhone in future.

Because the plan of putting a foldable screen in the iPhone is at a very early stage, it is not for the 2021 iPhone, notes a report by Bloomberg. Instead for 2021, Apple will only add minor changes to the upcoming iPhone 13, which will launch in September or October this year. Last year, with the iPhone 12, Apple moved to a new design language, with straight edges and boxy looks. This same design is likely to be used with the iPhone 13. The biggest change in the iPhone 13 is expected to be inclusion of a fingerprint sensor under the display, reports Bloomberg. Top Android phones like the OnePlus 8 Pro already use a fingerprint sensor under display. Apple, since it decided to remove the TouchID, has relied on its excellent Face ID for user authentication. However, in 2020 as people used phones while wearing masks limitations of the FaceID became apparent

Apple is reported to be working on a foldable iPhone on multiple occasions and it looks like the project is moving along well. We are hearing newer details about the foldable iPhone as the development proceeds. In the latest report from EqualOcean citing Omdia, the Apple foldable iPhone is said to come with stylus support. It isn’t clear if the device will support the current Apple Pencil or if it will use a completely new stylus. Recently, it is said the Cupertino giant has finalised the clamshell design for the foldable iPhone and it may look similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. The Cupertino giant is said to use a Ceramic Sheild glass and will be chemically treated to improve tolerance when folded or unfolded. The phone is said to sport a display size between 7.3-inch and 7.6-inch and may have an OLED panel. It is said that Apple’s foldable iPhone will be affordable compared to other similar offerings in the segment from competing brands. But since the phone is expected to launch in 2023, the components required for foldable phones should come down by then. There’s always a possibility of the launch being pushed further if it comes across any hardware or production issues.

Samsung in 2019 and 2020 unveiled two foldable smartphones, the the Galaxy Fold and the Galaxy Flip Z, both of which feature a foldable design that converts from one shape to another.

The Galaxy Fold transitions from a 4.6-inch smartphone into a 7.3-inch tablet, while the Galaxy Z Flip is a 6.7-inch smartphone that folds in half to be more portable. Other companies like Motorola and Huawei have also released foldable smartphones. The technology is nascent and still riddled with issues, but foldable smartphones are a trend right now, and a trend that Apple might one day adopt.

There has been no official confirmation from Apple that it is indeed developing a folding phone. Apple is also said to be working on ‘Project Titan’ which is an autonomous electric vehicle that is referred to as the Apple Car. The company is said to have been in talks with various automakers, including Kia, Nissan, and Hyundai, but is yet to find a perfect partner that suits its requirements. We hope to learn more details about the foldable phone and electric car going forward.
